How CBM is calculated

  • CBM (m³) = (Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ 1,000,000, multiplied by quantity.
  • Cubic Feet (ft³) = CBM × 35.3147.
  • CBM is the standard chargeable unit for LCL ocean freight (1 CBM ≈ 1,000 kg). For air freight, the volumetric weight uses a divisor of 6,000 (express couriers use 5,000).
  • Always measure the OUTSIDE of the carton (incl. corner protectors) — carriers measure to the largest point.
  • ⚠ Pallets, slip-sheets, and overhang are part of the chargeable volume — a 1m×1m×1.2m pallet of cartons = 1.2 CBM, not the carton stack volume.

Cargo volume and CBM: inputs, method and limitations

Use this calculator to organise a planning scenario and understand how its inputs affect the result. It is most useful when you keep a record of the units, dates and service assumptions. For cargo volume and cbm, the information you enter should describe the actual requirement rather than an idealised example.

Prepare the inputs

Collect the external packed length, width and height of each package, the measurement unit and package quantity. Check that the measurements and quantities use consistent units. If a value is unknown, label it as an assumption and revisit the result when confirmed information becomes available.

Interpret the result

Calculate each package group separately when dimensions differ, then add the volumes. Use packed measurements rather than product dimensions so cartons, pallets and protective packaging are represented.

Check before relying on the estimate

A cube calculation does not prove that cargo will physically fit inside equipment. Check door dimensions, orientation, stackability, weight limits and unusable space before confirming a load plan.
